Periods Don’t Pause for Pandemics

The same week in March 2020 the president announced the suspension of learning in all institutions, was the same week we had well-planned activities with one of the Secondary schools in Naibor, Laikipia North: as a continuation of the MHM program we had begun in January 2020.

We took a break like everyone else due to the pressure and uncertainty that Covid-19 came with. But then, periods did not recognize the break or the pandemic. We couldn’t stop thinking about the girls who were to benefit from our drive. With the necessary precautions, we worked with the village elders and chiefs to identify the needy girls and their households.

Youths from the target community also volunteered with us. We have reached over 5,992  girls since March 2020 but the need remains enormous and urgent. #periodsdontpauseforpandemic

The overall achievements of this project are:

  1. Provided education and awareness training on menstruation to 5,992 girls in the wider Laikipia County.
  2.  Capacity building for all concerned service providers in the same localities (Chiefs, Administrative Officers, Teachers, Community Group Leaders, Community Health Workers) on menstrual health & hygiene, Sexual Reproductive Health & Rights.
  3. Provided enough sanitary pads to these underserved teenagers to last them at least 6 months to impact the status of girls through improved health and personal hygiene.
