About UPG Harvest

UPG Harvest is an initiative that enables people to participate in developing and transforming Agriculture in Africa from seed to stomach. We focus on sustainability in agriculture as we at UPG continually find ways to make the world a better place. The UPG Harvest initiative focuses on the planting process of seed, nurturing the growth to attain maturity and develop nutrients for consumption. Here at #UPGHarvest We develop sustainable ways of growing seed without compromising the capability of future generations to meet their need for food.

Rationale and Potential for Impact

Seeds are an understated factor of production. Estimates suggest that of all seeds used in Africa, some 80% to 95% may come from the informal seed systems practiced mainly by small-scale farmers. These systems also contribute to maintaining diversity among African food crops and varieties, and preserving native African crop varieties which are essential in the African diet. In the process of developing African seed sector, it is essential that these seed systems be judiciously exploited in order maintain crop diversity, protect African native crop varieties, and secure availability of quality seeds to all farmers and to enable seed to play its catalytic role in agriculture development in Africa. There is an opportunity for Africans – experts and ordinary people alike – to play a role in a brighter future

Africa Seeds

Our Activities

UPG Harvest covers every aspect of agriculture but we lay emphasis on two principal activities which are:

Spreading awareness about the power of sustainable seeds

Designing and developing a pilot for a planting process in a selected African country

The activities will provide sensitization programs on sustainable seeds where our major stakeholders (Farmers, professionals and policy makers) will provide solutions and contribute to improving the challenges faced by the informal seed sector in Africa. The following groups are our primary focus:

Small holder farmers

Women via women’s agricultural associations

Young farmers

Reinforce Farmer-Led Solutions

Promote Seed Diversity

We work with farmers, Seed organizations to preserve and expand seed diversity.
