Mental Health amid the Covid-19 Pandemic

The Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown were not kind to us. It hit everyone emotionally – with a significant increase in stress levels and a severe rise in emotions of anger, anxiety, loneliness, and hopelessness. We never imagined that we would have to be stuck inside for so long.

According to a report by the WHO Regional Office for Europe, “In public mental health terms, the main psychological impact to date is elevated rates of stress or anxiety. But as new measures and impacts are introduced – especially quarantine and its effects on many people’s usual activities, routines or livelihoods – levels of loneliness, depression, harmful alcohol and drug use, and self-harm or suicidal behaviour are also expected to rise.”

The Sukoon Diaries, under the Counter Speech Fellowship project at Young Leaders for Active Citizenship, developed a project that was aimed at advocating mental health and spreading awareness besides providing necessary resources. We also worked on a specific aim to advocate mental health amid the outburst of the Covid-19 Pandemic.

In those trying times, it was very important to take care of your mental health, go easy on yourself, and take time out for activities you enjoy. It didn’t matter what you did, as long as it took you out of your worries.

We also implored people to talk to loved ones over the phone and express how they felt, and take breaks from social media, especially from content and news that triggered them. However, most importantly, we implored people to never forget to give themselves some extra dose of love and care. We were fighting together and we had all hopes to win the fight together.
