Art Yetu is owned by local Visual Artist and Entrepreneur MUDADI SAIDI well known as GuiArt, Founder of Mudadi Saidi Arts Mudadi’s vision is to empower young artists through visual Art and enable them to build their capacity and careers. Art Yetu is placed around the community in purpose to enable artists to contribute to their Industry by displaying their artworks and gaining profits (access to employment.)
In 2019, the Art Yetu program started in Kakuma refugee camp under the shade of an Ethiopian library with 11 students among them one female. Although the programme failed, One year later art yetu program resumed its activities in the Kakuma refugee camp, in the Burundi community.
After reopening the program, in 6 months we organised a graduation ceremony which was the first in the Kakuma refugee camp to have been organized by a local artist. Invited were senior artists from Kakuma and Kalubeyei Settlement camps, also some NGOs were represented by their staff, and the event took place at Jitegemee Center near Lutheran World Federation LWF Compound.
In 2021, we had more than 100 students (young refugee artists). So far, Art Yetu has empowered many refugees and hosts in Kakuma. While in 2022, Art Yetu organized its first competition in Kakuma Refugee Camp, this event was in partnership with stakeholders Soundforlife, Kitale Multimedia, Season of the Time Media Productions STMP Studio, Mapenzi Studios, Heritage Handcraft, Rey Films, Youth Initiative for Development and BKE Creative.
The program has been playing the role of cohesion between all the nationality which has joined us, Kakuma is a big place of diversity and at art yetu we take this opportunity to bring peace through art. We believe and hope that through art we can make a difference.
