HIV/AIDS: Fighting the Menace

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), HIV has been responsible for 40,1 million [33.6-48.6 million] deaths worldwide. It is estimated that between 650 000 and 860 000 individuals would have lost their lives to HIV in 2021 and that between 1.5 million and 2.0 million will have contracted the virus. HIV infection cannot be cured at this time.

A manageable chronic health condition, HIV infection has allowed individuals living with HIV to enjoy long, healthy lives because of advances in HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care—including for opportunistic infections. As of the end of 2021, the number of persons living with HIV was predicted to be 38.4 million [33.9-43.8 million], with around two-thirds of those people (25.6 million) residing in the WHO African Region.
