As a UPG Champion, I’ve taken on the role of advocating for climate consciousness within my community through the Green Soul of Education Community, also known as Green SEC. This initiative aims to spotlight the urgency of the climate crisis and integrate climate education into our national curricula, fostering the development of climate-ready generations. There is no alternative to our planet; it’s crucial to recognize that even small shifts in local climates can have profound global consequences. It’s our collective responsibility to address this challenge collaboratively.
Iraq faces significant vulnerability to the effects of climate change, ranking as the fifth most susceptible nation to reduced water and food availability, as well as extreme temperatures. These changes threaten food and water security, social stability, and public health. Despite this stark reality, many remain unaware of the direct impact of their daily actions on the climate, not only affecting Iraq but also reverberating globally.
To address this gap in awareness, I’m initiating community-based programs to educate and engage individuals on the climate crisis. Additionally, I plan to organize climate-themed competitions within schools to instil a proactive climate mindset among students, cultivating future agents of change. Through these efforts, we strive to empower our community to confront and mitigate the challenges of climate change head-on.
