Empowering Youth for Gender Equality in Alexandria, Egypt

The “Empowering Youth for Gender Equality” project was implemented under Revivals Egypt (State of Youth Alexandria) with the support of KidsRights. The initiative focused on breaking gender stereotypes that affect both girls and boys, especially in lower-middle-income communities.

The project unfolded in several phases:

  • Youth outreach and orientation
    Gender-specific and mixed dialogue circles
  • Stereotype-breaking workshops
  • A youth-led social awareness campaign
  • A family engagement session
  • A final showcase event

Participants explored questions such as:

  • What expectations are placed on boys and girls?
  • How do stereotypes limit potential?
  • How can young people lead change respectfully within their cultural context?

Instead of lecturing participants, we centered youth voices. Many shared personal experiences of pressure, silence, and misunderstanding. The space allowed them to speak honestly and realize they were not alone.

The social awareness campaign amplified their reflections through creative storytelling, visuals, and discussions that extended beyond the workshop room. Families were also engaged to ensure that conversations continued at home.

The project directly contributed to SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). More importantly, it demonstrated that young people are not passive recipients of social norms. They are capable of leading meaningful, community-rooted change.
