It is a little tricky to educate kids on why they should follow the Covid19 hygiene protocol. For Assumpta Digital School in Dar es Salaam we had to twist methods of educating kids to practical models in 2020. We used animations, songs, dances and a lot of time in practice sessions since as a country we did not have a long lockdown (30 days).
Once our students got a hold of the protocols, they were a mirror to other schools. The songs coordinated by our students were used to educate the other students in other schools (More than five) while our models were also adopted by many schools in Tanzania for teaching children about Covid 19.
We provided training to teachers and school staff so that they could also take part in keeping safe for both the kids and their families while they are at work. The initiative was not funded but rather commissioned by the school. The initiative continued even in 2021 and we still empathize with our students to keep them safe everywhere they go.
One parent shared with us that her child refuses to get out of the house without wearing a mask or washing his hands whenever he comes back from school and outside. That act motivated the family to also adhere to the measures.
