Championing Change: Organizing the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains one of the most pervasive and devastating human rights violations in the world. The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, held annually from November 25 to December 10, serves as a powerful platform to raise awareness and galvanize action towards ending GBV. Last year, I had the profound honor of participating in the organization of this critical campaign, in partnership with UN Women, the Embassy of Sweden, Gender Mainstreaming Makerere University, and the students.

Key activities included organizing X-Space, a dedicated space where students and community members could come together to discuss matters concerning GBV. These discussions were crucial for raising awareness, sharing resources, and empowering voices. Additionally, mobilizing a group of students to actively participate in the campaign was a significant aspect of my involvement. This included engaging the student body, ensuring a strong presence at key events, and encouraging students to witness and contribute to the efforts towards ending GBV.

Working with esteemed partners like UN Women, the Embassy of Sweden, and Makerere University added significant value to our campaign. Each partner brought unique strengths and resources that enriched our efforts. UN Women offered expertise and support, the Embassy of Sweden helped with funding and advocacy, and Gender Mainstreaming Makerere University provided academic resources and a platform to engage students and faculty.

Our community engagement included marches, rallies, and performances, all aimed at raising visibility and uniting the community against GBV. Leveraging media and online platforms was crucial for maximizing our reach through social media campaigns, press releases, and online discussions.

As the 16 Days of Activism drew to a close, we reflected on our achievements and challenges. The campaign’s success was evident in the increased awareness, community engagement, and support for survivors. However, the fight against GBV is far from over. The 16 Days of Activism serve as a reminder that sustained effort and commitment are necessary to create a world free from violence.
