Art Yetu in Kakuma Refugee Camp

Art Yetu is a youth initiative program that was launched in 2019 with the aim of educating, empowering, and transforming the lives of both refugee and host youths through visual art skills.

In 2022, Mudadi organized a competition that provided young teenage artists with a challenge, through an art competition, encouraging them to engage their minds, sketch ideas, and find solutions to the problems they face.

The target audience for this competition included everyone below 25 years of age who were willing to attend and contribute to social and behavioural change in our community. The maximum number of participants for this competition was 40 children who were residents of Turkana County, especially those living in Kakuma.

The primary objective of this competition was to motivate young artists and assist them in developing their creative talents by exposing them to the current talent in the art world.

The overarching goal is to provide young artists with access to a different perspective on the arts, enabling them to learn and grow.

Our secondary objectives are as follows:

1. Bring together young refugees and hosts to collaboratively address artistic challenges faced by refugees.

2. Create a platform for participants to exchange their feelings and learn from one another.

3. Provide art materials to the 10 nominees, enabling them to complete their commissioned artworks.

4. Contribute to the self-reliance of the contestants.

We also believe that this initiative will

– Promote art, design, and creativity.

– Foster innovative solutions to the challenges faced by contestants.

– Increase brand awareness.

– Provide opportunities for artists to grow and advance their art careers.
