On December 8th, 2024, I had the inspiring opportunity to contribute to a remarkable initiative – “Young Community Voices for Climate Justice.” Organized by the International Climate Change Development Initiative (ICCDI) in Ekiti State, Nigeria, this project aimed to empower young people to become active agents of change in the fight against climate change.
My role involved co-facilitating a session for 48 diverse young participants, including agricultural teachers, local government directors, and farmers. Through engaging discussions, we explored the critical issue of climate change and its projected impact on food security for women in Africa by 2050, as outlined by the UNDP.
To spark critical thinking and collaboration, we divided the participants into smaller groups. These groups delved deeper into specific climate justice challenges, analyzing them from both local and global perspectives. Importantly, the discussions centred on the unique challenges faced by young people in the context of climate change.
These powerful recommendations were conveyed to the ICCDI, with the ultimate goal of reaching the governor of Ekiti State. This serves as a powerful testament to the aspirations and potential of young people in our community.
This experience underscored the importance of youth empowerment in tackling climate change. By equipping young people with knowledge, fostering dialogue, and providing them with platforms to advocate for change, we can create a more just and sustainable future for all.
