On June 24th, 2023, a dedicated group of volunteers in Santo Tirso, Portugal (Porto district) came together to make a positive impact on their environment. Organized by a resident, the clean-up activity tackled litter and debris in the city, demonstrating the power of community action in promoting a cleaner, healthier environment.
Over three hours, the volunteers collected a significant amount of waste, totalling 4kg. This included items commonly found as litter, such as plastic packaging, cigarette butts, and even pieces of rope. Following the clean-up, the collected waste wasn’t simply thrown away. The volunteers took the extra step to sort the materials responsibly. Recyclable items were separated by material type and placed in the appropriate recycling bins. Non-recyclable materials were disposed of responsibly, and cigarette butts – a specific environmental concern – were donated to an association that specializes in their proper disposal.
The clean-up activity wasn’t just about collecting trash. It was also an opportunity to raise awareness and encourage responsible waste management practices. By sorting the collected waste, the volunteers demonstrated the importance of proper waste disposal for a healthier world. The event concluded with a reflection session, where participants discussed the impact of their efforts and brainstormed ideas for future clean-up initiatives. This not only solidified the positive impact of the event but also fostered a sense of community ownership in keeping Santo Tirso clean.
