The initiative, “Make Zazzau Green,” is spearheaded by Ms. Sanayat Saad and involves a group of dedicated individuals committed to combating climate change by planting trees in the city of Zaria, Nigeria. This informal group action aims to address the pressing issues of climate change and global warming by enhancing the urban green cover, which will help mitigate carbon emissions and improve air quality.
As an initial step, the group has successfully planted 300 trees across several locations in Zaria. This effort is community-driven and primarily self-sponsored, with contributions from local members and small donations from supporters who recognize the importance of increasing green spaces in urban areas.
The initiative has directly involved and benefitted the immediate community of Zaria, engaging over 30 volunteers and raising awareness among thousands of residents about the importance of tree planting for climate resilience.
Ms Sanayat Saad and her team are enthusiastic about the positive impact of the initiative and are already planning future phases to expand tree-planting efforts to more areas in Zaria. The group is committed to fostering a culture of environmental stewardship and sustainability within the community, making “Make Zazzau Green” a model for grassroots climate action.
