On Saturday, 11th May 2024, I had the privilege of engaging with a vibrant group of youth from the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) in Mzee Wanyama, Nakuru, Kenya. This dynamic gathering brought together high school students, aspiring college students, current undergraduates, and recent graduates, creating a diverse and engaging environment.
The session began with an introduction to United People Globals (UPG) and an invitation for those eligible to consider applying for the Sustainability Leadership Program. I then guided the group through a discussion on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. I encouraged them to delve deeper into these critical goals at their own pace.
Building on this foundation, I presented my project, “ECOPLAST,” a comprehensive initiative aimed at addressing the pressing issue of plastic waste within the local community. “ECOPLAST” focuses on implementing innovative strategies to reduce plastic pollution, promote recycling, and encourage responsible consumption and disposal practices.
The session was met with enthusiastic engagement, fostering a lively exchange of ideas and insights. This interaction not only provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities related to SDG 12 but also served as a powerful reminder of the potential of youth to drive positive change within their communities. By empowering young people with knowledge, skills, and the tools to address local challenges, we can collectively work towards a more sustainable and equitable future for all.
