Empowering Women Artisans of Haritar, Kashmir

The village of Haritar, located 5 kilometres from my hometown of Sopore, is a hub for Pashmina artisans. The women of Haritar are the custodians of the indigenous art of Kashmir. They engage in artisanal work, such as embroidery, Sozni work, and Pashmina work. However, these artists face significant challenges due to conservative community norms, gender discrimination, and inadequate awareness. These interconnected factors render women financially dependent on men, confining their existence to domestic roles and stifling economic opportunities and autonomy.

During my tenure as a Gender Champion Fellow at the Human Welfare Voluntary Organisation (HWVO), I had the opportunity to lead a project examining the contributions of women artisans to the rural economy and how gender dynamics influence their roles and opportunities. To overcome the obstacles faced by artists, we organised an impactful awareness session, empowering artisans to recognise the value of their craftsmanship and its market potential. Key stakeholders from relevant departments were invited to support the artisans’ growth. My team and I successfully enrolled these artisans in skill development initiatives, enabling them to generate income through diverse resources.

We educated them about government initiatives and created a social media group to monitor their progress. These efforts aimed to alleviate financial insecurity and reduce dependence on exploitative intermediaries. Furthermore, we conducted a targeted awareness campaign promoting gender equality within their community, highlighting the significance of women’s empowerment. By emphasising the importance of literacy among women artisans, we enhanced their business acumen and decision-making capabilities.

This initiative empowered me to drive positive change in my community for the lives of women artisans. I hope to witness their continued growth. This project was a transformative experience that shaped my perspective on social responsibility. Together, we can make a lasting impact.
