Developing Inclusive and Profitable Dairy Value Chains for Pastoralist Community in Borana Zone” is a multi-partner project (CST, CIFA, OPA, and F&S) funded by the Jersey Overseas Aid Commission (JOA). This three-year initiative aimed to improve the economic opportunities of 5,351 women and youth in Borena Zone, Moyale district, Ethiopia.
The project focused on enhancing dairy market systems to empower women socially and economically while conserving the ecosystem. Key objectives included establishing an efficient dairy market, promoting sustainable natural resource management, and supporting pastoral and agro-pastoral women empowerment.
The initiative addressed several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): No Poverty (1), Zero Hunger (2), Gender Equality (5), and Climate Action (13). The project made substantial progress in empowering women and improving economic opportunities in the Borena Zone, Moyale district. By leveraging the strengths of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR), agroforestry, project flexibility, private sector engagement, access to finance, and the THM approach, the project has created a sustainable and resilient community. The lessons learned from this project can serve as a model for similar initiatives aiming to achieve economic and social empowerment in other regions.
