Transforming Urban Waste: A Community-Driven Approach in Hawassa

In Hawassa City, the growing issue of urban solid waste has negatively impacted the environment and residents’ health. To address this challenge, I led a community-driven initiative that focused on educating local residents about waste segregation, recycling, and proper disposal. We partnered with local authorities to establish waste collection points and provided residents with recycling bins. As a result, over 500 households have started practising waste segregation, and waste collected in targeted areas has been reduced by 30%. This initiative not only improved waste management practices but also empowered the community to actively contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment. Our approach is sustainable, with continued education and collaboration to ensure lasting change.
