Empowering Women, Protecting Our Planet: A Success Story from the PLEASE Initiative

On May 29, 2024, a significant event took place in Taba at the RBG, marking a crucial step towards a cleaner, greener future. The Bhutan Ecological Society and Gross International Nature organized the “Household-Level Plastic Waste Management Advocacy Program,” a transformative training session that empowered over 200 women with essential plastic waste management skills.

This impactful program was a key component of the Plastic Free Rivers and Seas for South Asia (PLEASE) initiative, a collaborative effort funded by the World Bank and implemented in partnership with the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP), with the valuable support of The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

The training session equipped women with the knowledge and skills to effectively segregate plastic waste at the household level. This knowledge empowers them to become agents of change within their communities, promoting sustainable waste management practices and inspiring others to adopt eco-friendly habits.

The success of this program demonstrates the power of community-based solutions and the critical role of women in environmental conservation. By empowering women with the knowledge and skills to address plastic pollution, we are not only protecting our rivers and seas but also creating a more sustainable and resilient future for generations to come.
