In the vibrant but often overlooked community of New Benin, Edo State, Nigeria, a team of dedicated medical students from the University of Benin Medical Students Association launched a public health initiative that would leave a lasting impact.
Our mission was to provide free health screenings to the local population, offering vital services like blood glucose tests, malaria checks, blood pressure readings, body mass index assessments, and dental and eye health examinations.
Beyond the physical screenings, we embarked on a comprehensive sensitization campaign, addressing critical health topics such as vaccination, preventable infectious diseases, and the growing burden of chronic illnesses like hypertension and type 2 diabetes.
By reaching over 156 adults of various ages, we’ve not only identified health concerns but also empowered individuals with knowledge to take charge of their well-being. This initiative is a testament to the power of compassion, collaboration, and a commitment to improving public health.
