Cilegon, Indonesia, has historically faced challenges with religious tolerance. With over 8,000 Christians unable to worship freely due to a lack of churches, the need for interfaith dialogue and inclusivity was clear. My name is Tito, a Muslim, and the founder of Bastra ID, an educational organization dedicated to fostering a more inclusive society set out to make a difference.
One of Bastra ID’s innovative initiatives is “Kartu Berembug,” a computational thinking-based learning game. Designed to address issues like intolerance, gender inequality, bullying, and disability discrimination, the game has already reached over 200 students in Cilegon and surrounding areas. “Kartu Berembug” encourages students to engage in critical thinking and problem-solving, fostering skills necessary for effective interfaith dialogue.
Participating in these educational programs gives students the tools and confidence to become “diversity peers” within their communities. These student leaders can promote understanding and acceptance among their peers, fostering a more inclusive environment.
My dedication to building a more tolerant Cilegon has not gone unnoticed. I have been recognized for my work with prestigious awards, including Unilever’s Every U Does Good Heroes and “Pemuda Pelopor Nasional” by the Ministry of Youth and Sport.
Bastra ID serves as a powerful example of how education can be a catalyst for positive social change. By equipping young people with the skills and knowledge to promote tolerance and understanding, Bastra ID is paving the way for a brighter future in Cilegon.
